Malignant gliomas in adults.

چکیده
Copyright © 2008 Massachusetts Medical Society. Malignant gliomas account for approximately 70% of the 22,500 new cases of malignant primary brain tumors that are diagnosed in adults in the United States each year.1-3 Although relatively uncommon, malignant gliomas are associated with disproportionately high morbidity and mortality. Despite optimal treatment, the median survival is only 12 to 15 months for patients with glioblastomas and 2 to 5 years for patients with anaplastic gliomas. Recently, there have been important advances in our understanding of the molecular pathogenesis of malignant gliomas and progress in treating them. This review summarizes the diagnosis and management of these tumors in adults and highlights some areas under investigation.

Gliomas account for almost 80% of primary malignant brain tumors in adults. Magnetic Resonance imaging (MRI) is still the gold standard for diagnosis of brain tumors and brain 99mTc-tetrofosmin Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (99mTc-tetrofosmin-SPECT) has been established as a useful tool for their evaluation. Fluorine-18–2-fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose positron emi...

Gliomas include a group of primary central nervous system (CNS) neoplasms with characteristics of neuroglial cells (eg, astrocytes, oligodendrocytes). The gliomas are classified commonly to WHO grade I-IV gliomas. The grading is based on the presence of nuclear atypia, vascular proliferation, mitoses, and necrosis. The malignant gliomas are progressive brain tumors that are divided into anaplas...
متن کاملPrinciples of treatment of malignant gliomas in adults: an overview.
The cornerstone of conventional treatments of malignant gliomas in adults has been surgical debulking, radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Almost always a combination of these treatments is used. With these conventional treatments the outcome, as measured by survival and quality of life, has remained universally dismal. Novel treatments, which are at different stages of laboratory and clinical ...
متن کاملExtra-Neural Metastases of Malignant Gliomas: Myth or Reality?
Malignant gliomas account for approximately 60% of all primary brain tumors in adults. Prognosis for these patients has not significantly changed in recent years-despite debulking surgery, radiotherapy and cytotoxic chemotherapy-with a median survival of 9-12 months. Virtually no patients are cured of their illness. Malignant gliomas are usually locally invasive tumors, though extra-neural meta...
